Channel 4 has officially confirmed the long-term future of Hollyoaks following an impressive surge in viewing figures and the success of its groundbreaking 30th anniversary celebrations.
Digital Transformation Pays Off
The Chester-based soap, which became the first British serial drama to transition to a digital-first model in 2023, has seen its ratings climb to their strongest performance in years. This strategic shift to releasing episodes early across digital platforms, while reducing broadcast episodes to three per week, has clearly resonated with audiences.
The streamlined approach has particularly strengthened engagement among 16-34 year olds, who remain at the core of the show's demographic. Despite initial challenges that included letting go of some cast and crew to accommodate the new transmission pattern, the digital move has proven overwhelmingly successful.
Historic Brookside Crossover Breaks Records
The centrepiece of Hollyoaks' anniversary celebrations was the UK's first-ever soap crossover episode, which saw characters return to the iconic Brookside Close on Wednesday October 22. This ambitious fan service delivered spectacular results, becoming Hollyoaks' best-performing episode since October 2021 with 645,000 consolidated viewers.
The episode also achieved the show's highest consolidated share (5.8%) since February 2020 and set new digital records, becoming the best-ever Hollyoaks episode on streaming with 522,000 views within seven days - surpassing all previous non-Christmas episodes.
Viewers were treated to returning Brookside favourites including Bobby Grant (Ricky Tomlinson), Billy Corkhill (John McArdle), and Timothy "Tinhead" O'Leary (Philip Olivier). The storyline cleverly wove both soap universes together through character Mick Johnson (Louis Emerick), who residents of Dee Valley know as Donny Clarke.
Multiple Successes Drive Renewed Confidence
The anniversary week delivered multiple triumphs beyond the Brookside crossover. Hollyoaks Later made an explosive return the same evening, featuring shocking scenes where Dodger Savage was assaulted by gang members, pulling in 409,000 views.
The week also featured a dramatic plane crash, several major character deaths, and the return of legacy characters from the soap's earlier years. Fans were particularly delighted to see super-villain Clare Devine return from the dead and the surprise appearance of Jeremy Sheffield as Jez Blake, twin brother of the infamous Patrick Blake.
