Art After Dark Returns: Free West End Art Trail & Gallery Nights
Art After Dark Returns to London's West End

As the long winter nights persist, Londoners are set to receive a vibrant cultural boost with the return of Art After Dark, the West End's celebrated free late-night public art show. This eagerly anticipated event kicks off next week, transforming central London into a hub of creativity and community spirit.

A Week-Long Celebration of Art and Light

From February 3 to February 10, Art After Dark will illuminate the streets of the West End with a dazzling array of artworks, music, and colour. The festival aims to provide a much-needed lift during the gloomy winter months, offering a free seven-day celebration that showcases the city's rich artistic heritage and dynamic nightlife.

Headline Installation: 'Rise and Shine' by Lakwena Maciver

The centrepiece of this year's event is the monumental installation 'Rise and Shine' by London-based artist Lakwena Maciver. Standing an impressive seven metres tall in the heart of Piccadilly Circus, this captivating work is constructed from disco light boxes. It channels the energetic vibe of 1980s and 1990s London nightlife, featuring acid-bright visuals and a soundtrack of hip-hop, soul, and funk.

Maciver shared her inspiration behind the piece, stating: 'This installation is a celebration of joy, community, and the vibrant energy that pulses through London’s music scene. By unveiling it in Piccadilly Circus, we’re inviting everyone to gather, dance, and experience London’s music culture in a space transformed by colour, light, and sound.'

Expansive Public Art Trail and Digital Displays

Beyond the headline installation, Art After Dark will feature a free public art trail with numerous artworks popping up across the West End. Additionally, new digital artworks will be displayed daily on the iconic Piccadilly Lights and other large screens, ensuring a constantly evolving visual experience throughout the week.

Gallery Participation and Late-Night Openings

A key component of Art After Dark is the involvement of numerous galleries, which will extend their opening hours for special events. On Thursday, February 5, art enthusiasts can embark on a gallery crawl across the West End's finest independent and commercial spaces.

  • Cristea Roberts Gallery: Currently hosting an exhibition of works by Georg Baselitz.
  • The Mayor Gallery: Featuring an exhibition of radical European artists.

Participants can choose between an expert-guided tour starting from £10 or opt for a free self-guided tour to explore at their own pace.

The following night, on Friday, February 6, several prestigious institutions will keep their doors open until 9pm for special Friday Late sessions. These include:

  1. The National Gallery
  2. The Royal Academy of Art
  3. The National Portrait Gallery

Live Music and Special Events

Art After Dark extends beyond visual arts, with a packed schedule of live music performances at various West End venues. Highlights include sessions at:

A spectacular afterparty led by drag icon Bimini will take place at the National Gallery on Thursday, February 5, adding a lively and inclusive dimension to the festivities.

To complement the artistic offerings, a selection of local eateries across the West End will provide special deals and discounts throughout the event. This initiative encourages visitors to make a full evening of their cultural exploration, enjoying both art and cuisine.
