Bill Gates Withdraws from Indian AI Impact Summit

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has withdrawn from the Indian AI Impact Summit, a high-profile event designed to showcase India's role in artificial intelligence. He was scheduled to deliver a keynote address on the inauguration day alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi, French President Emmanuel Macron, Google head Sundar Pichai, and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman.

Controversies Surround the Summit

The summit has been plagued by multiple controversies, including allegations of mismanagement and inconvenience to delegates, exhibitors, and the public due to extensive security sweeps. Additionally, an Indian university, Galgotias University, faced criticism for falsely claiming to have developed a Chinese 'robodog,' later apologising for the misunderstanding.

Just hours before his scheduled speech, the Gates Foundation announced via a social media post that Mr. Gates would not be speaking. The statement read, "After careful consideration, and to ensure the focus remains on the AI summit's key priorities, Mr Gates will not be delivering his keynote address." It added, "The Gates Foundation remains fully committed to our work in India to advance our shared health and development goals."

Background on Gates' Involvement

Mr. Gates' participation had drawn significant attention, particularly in light of recent revelations from the US Justice Department, which released emails, photographs, and documents detailing his exchanges with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Mr. Gates has maintained that his meetings with Epstein were solely for philanthropic discussions and described them as a mistake.

Until the day before the summit, the Gates Foundation had confirmed his attendance, stating, "Bill Gates is attending the AI Impact Summit. He will be delivering his keynote as scheduled." His withdrawal is seen as a major blow to the event, which aimed to position India as a serious player in the global AI landscape.

The Indian AI Impact Summit was intended to serve as a platform for demonstrating the country's advancements in artificial intelligence, but it has been overshadowed by these issues, highlighting challenges in organising large-scale international tech events.
