Santander Announces Major Branch Closures Across the UK

Banking giant Santander is set to close 40 branches throughout the United Kingdom in April and May 2026, as the financial institution continues to respond to the accelerating shift toward digital banking among its customer base. This move follows the closure of four branches earlier in January 2026, part of a broader plan to scale back its physical presence by a total of 44 locations.

Digital Transformation Drives Closure Strategy

Santander has attributed these closures to a significant and ongoing transition to online banking, with the bank confirming that an overwhelming 96% of all customer transactions are now conducted through its digital platforms. This trend underscores the changing habits of consumers, who increasingly prefer the convenience of mobile and internet banking over visiting physical branches.

The planned closures will impact 291 jobs, placing these positions at risk. This announcement comes less than a year after Santander revealed the shutdown of 95 branches in March 2025, which affected 750 staff members. The bank's restructuring efforts have been substantial, with then UK chief executive Mike Regnier disclosing in July 2025 that approximately 2,000 positions had been eliminated over the previous year, warning that further redundancies might be on the horizon.

Community Banking Alternatives to Mitigate Impact

To address the reduction in physical branches, Santander has indicated that shuttered locations will be replaced by "community bankers" operating through Santander Local outlets or shared banking hubs. This initiative aims to ensure that customers in affected areas retain access to essential banking services, maintaining a level of personal interaction and support despite the branch closures.
