Santander Announces Major Branch Network Changes for 2026
Santander is set to close 18 bank branches across the United Kingdom in 2026, as part of a sweeping transformation of its physical network. This move follows the closure of 95 branches in 2025 and reflects a broader industry trend towards digital banking services.
The bank has already implemented significant alterations at 52 locations, with many branches seeing reduced operating hours or becoming counter-free to adapt to changing customer behaviours.
Shift to Digital Banking Drives Changes
A comprehensive review conducted by Santander in 2021 highlighted a clear preference among customers for mobile, online, and telephone banking options. In response, the bank has adjusted its branch operations to better align with this digital shift.
Currently, 36 Santander branches are operating on reduced hours, typically opening only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM. This schedule aims to streamline services while maintaining some in-person access for customers who require it.
Counter-Free Branches and Community Initiatives
In addition to the reduced hours, 18 branches have been converted to counter-free models. This change, which began rolling out in phases from June 16, 2025, is designed to create more space and time for branch teams to assist customers with complex queries and financial advice.
To mitigate the impact of these closures, Santander is introducing Community Bankers who will visit local spaces such as libraries and community halls on a weekly basis. Customers can also access support through a dedicated helpline at 0330 678 2469, where they can book branch appointments or seek assistance.
