London's acclaimed "smallest" bakery, which consistently sells out of its artisanal pastries, has dramatically expanded its footprint in North London with a brand-new location. Astrid, the wildly popular bakery nestled in Muswell Hill, has inaugurated a second site merely a few doors down from its original flagship store, addressing high customer demand and spatial limitations.
From Lockdown Hobby to Neighborhood Sensation
Founded in November 2020 by entrepreneur Charlotte O'Kelly during the pandemic lockdowns, Astrid began as a humble home baking venture. O'Kelly initially crafted pastries and breads for friends and family before scaling up to supply local cafes. The delivery-only model, featuring weekly Breakfast Boxes that sold out within minutes, quickly evolved into a brick-and-mortar establishment at 118A Alexandra Park Road.
This original location, celebrated for its signature viennoiserie like the iconic pistachio croissant and seasonal fruit Danish, became a local institution. However, its compact size meant no indoor seating, leading to constant queues and sell-outs. The bakery's reputation for using fresh, high-quality, seasonal ingredients baked in small batches only fueled its cult following.
Introducing Astrid Atelier: A Space for Community and Creation
The new venue, named Astrid Atelier, is strategically situated at 114 Alexandra Park Road, just a short stroll from the first shop. This expansion fundamentally transforms the customer experience by providing ample seating for the first time. The Atelier can accommodate 20 guests both indoors and outdoors, plus 12 bar stools along its window-lined facade, allowing patrons to enjoy their treats on-site.
More than just a retail space, Astrid Atelier functions as a combined production kitchen and culinary hub. Designed around an open kitchen format, it features a live baking counter where products are made and sold throughout the day. This setup not only enhances transparency but also creates an engaging atmosphere for visitors.
Broadening the Bakery's Delicious Offerings
The additional square footage enables Astrid to significantly diversify its menu beyond the core pastry range. While all signature bakes—including croissants, cinnamon buns, and Danish pastries—remain available, the Atelier introduces a savory-focused selection. New items include focaccia, pain suisse, and an array of filled croissants, catering to a wider range of tastes throughout the day.
Furthermore, the expansion unlocks new business avenues for the brand. Astrid now plans to venture into sourdough bread production, retail product lines, baking masterclasses, and special events. The beloved delivery breakfast boxes, a staple during the bakery's early days, are also set to make a triumphant return thanks to the increased production capacity.
Charlotte O'Kelly's journey from community baker to business owner exemplifies how passion and quality can drive remarkable success. With Astrid Atelier now open, Muswell Hill residents and visitors alike can look forward to more opportunities to savor the bakery's celebrated creations in a welcoming, spacious environment.
