Uber Ramps Up Ramadan Support with Massive Free Meal Initiative for UK Couriers
Uber and Uber Eats have unveiled their most comprehensive Ramadan support program to date, distributing 100,000 complimentary dates and bottles of water alongside thousands of free Iftar meals to drivers and couriers across the United Kingdom. This initiative, now well underway during the holy month, represents a significant expansion of the company's ongoing commitment to supporting Muslim communities and the gig economy workforce.
Nationwide Distribution of Essential Ramadan Supplies
Throughout Ramadan, Uber Eats is providing fasting couriers with 100,000 dates and water bottles, enabling them to break their fast while continuing to deliver meals and groceries nationwide. This practical support addresses the specific needs of workers observing daily fasting from dawn to sunset, ensuring they can maintain their religious practices without interruption to their delivery schedules.
Strategic Partnerships for Community Nourishment
The program features a major collaboration with Popeyes, offering free Iftar meals to couriers at sunset locations across the country. Additionally, Uber Eats has partnered with 35 independently-run high-street restaurants in major towns and cities to provide thousands of locally prepared takeaway Iftar meals specifically for couriers.
Beyond individual meal distribution, Uber is organizing communal Iftar dinners for more than 350 drivers observing Ramadan in five key cities: London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, and Edinburgh. These gatherings foster community spirit and provide meaningful recognition for drivers during the holy month.
Building on Established Community Programs
This year's expanded initiative builds upon Uber's previous successful Ramadan programs in London, including Sundown Spots, Open for Suhoor, and The Scoopery. The company's research revealed that 93 percent of UK Muslims believe brands should do more to raise awareness of Ramadan, directly informing Uber's long-term strategic approach to the holy month.
Merve Basci, General Manager of Uber Eats UK, emphasized: "Ramadan is rooted in generosity and community. We are focused on showing up in practical ways, supporting couriers who are fasting and helping independent restaurants serve their communities during this important time."
Andrew Brem, General Manager of Uber UK, added: "Drivers are at the heart of our platform. Hosting Iftar dinners across the UK is a meaningful way to recognise those observing Ramadan and bring drivers together during the holy month."
Supporting Small Businesses During Ramadan
The program also provides ongoing support for small restaurants offering Suhoor (pre-dawn meals), further extending Uber's community impact. Uber Eats collaborates with over 65,000 merchants throughout the UK, predominantly small and medium-sized businesses, processing millions of orders weekly through its nationwide courier network.
This multifaceted approach demonstrates how technology platforms can create meaningful support systems for both workers and local businesses during significant cultural and religious observances, setting a new standard for corporate community engagement during Ramadan in the United Kingdom.
