One of London's most beloved and romantic restaurants, Maggie Jones in Kensington, has flung open its doors once again, marking a triumphant return after being shut for two years.
A Phoenix Rises in Kensington
The iconic eatery, a sister establishment to Belgravia's La Poule Au Pot, was forced to close in September 2023 due to a devastating electrical fire. Many regulars and London food lovers feared it had served its last meal for good. However, defying expectations, the restaurant has now resumed service, much to the delight of its loyal patrons.
Six Decades of London Dining History
Maggie Jones is no ordinary restaurant; it is a piece of London's living history. Having first opened its doors in 1964, it is one of the capital's oldest dining establishments. It began life under the name Nan’s Kitchen before adopting its current title in the 1970s. The name pays homage to Princess Margaret, who used 'Maggie Jones' as an alias when making reservations.
Remarkably, in its 60-year history, the restaurant has only closed twice: first during the Covid-19 pandemic, and then due to the recent fire. It is regularly tipped as one of the most romantic spots in London, known for its intensely atmospheric and rustic decor.
A Menu of Timeless Classics
The relaunch sees the return of the restaurant's cherished menu, which focuses on hearty French and British country classics. Diners can once again enjoy comforting dishes such as rich onion soup, perfectly cooked roast rump of lamb, a traditional fish pie, and a robust steak and kidney pie. For dessert, classics like apple crumble with custard provide a fittingly nostalgic end to the meal.
The restaurant's unique charm has been well-documented. A recent review celebrated its 'old school energy' and described its over-the-top rustic interior as looking as though it was 'styled by some sort of Beatrix Potter character.' The space is bedecked with dried flowers and wicker baskets, with hearty fare served in Provençal earthenware pots on mismatching toile plates, creating a uniquely cosy and memorable dining experience.
