Rediscovering Ibiza's Timeless Bohemian Spirit
When one imagines Ibiza, visions of free-spirited hippy havens and electrifying clubbing nights from the 1960s and 1970s often spring to mind. For many Gen X travellers, including myself and my husband, this iconic island vibe had somehow remained an elusive mystery. That all changed during a recent autumn getaway to the north of this glorious Balearic gem, leaving us both pondering: Why on earth haven't we visited before?
A Village-Style Sanctuary with Spectacular Views
Our base was the adults-only Fergus Style Punta Arabi in Es Canar, nestled on the island's eastern coastline. This charming hotel underwent extensive renovation and relaunched in May last year, transforming into a picturesque village-style retreat. Imagine whitewashed walls, abundant cacti, and pine-scented walkways perched on a cliffside offering breathtaking sea vistas. Our room exuded cosy, boho-inspired elegance, providing the perfect sanctuary.
The hotel serves as an ideal flop-and-sunbathe destination. We frequently enjoyed the Lola Bar by the pool, which serves an excellent selection of food and refreshing drinks. For those seeking extra Instagram-worthy glamour, Bali Beds are available for hire at fifty euros per day. A significant advantage of staying here is the weekly hippy market held on the grounds every Wednesday from April through October. With over five hundred stalls, it stands as the largest and oldest market on Ibiza—a true kaftan paradise offering handcrafted jewellery, vintage fashion, street food, and live music that enhances the laid-back atmosphere.
Culinary Delights and Coastal Exploration
The hotel boasts several dining options for convenience and quality. Breakfast at Es Mercat features made-to-order omelettes, full English breakfasts, Balearic continental meats and cheeses, fresh fruit, and other locally sourced ingredients. We appreciated the variety and freshness. Dinner is also served here, and one evening we dined at Lola's Bar, savouring the romantic sea views alongside tuna satay, Lola's burger, gambas tacos, and expertly crafted cocktails. Es Raco Restaurant offers a bistro menu and premium drinks for further variety.
Having hired a car, we ventured into the surrounding area. By chance, in central Santa Eulalia, we discovered Hambre—a stylish restaurant renowned for its superb decor and exceptional reputation. Drawn by its gorgeous interior and appealing menu of tacos, satays, fish dishes, and burgers, we opted for pork belly with shallots, figs, and beetroot, paired with organic wine. The meal was incredible, and we felt completely immersed in the relaxed Spanish ambiance. For diverse culinary experiences, Calle San Vicente, known as Restaurant Street, offers numerous choices.
Secluded Beaches and Charming Towns
Within walking distance of the hotel lies Playa de Es Canar, a main beach with shallow, calm waters ideal for families. It features sunbeds, umbrellas, water sports like parasailing and pedalos, live music, and even sunset DJ sets—creating an atmosphere of understated fun. Nearby, the secluded Cala Nova beach offers tranquillity. We particularly adored Cala Llenya, north of Es Canar; arriving early is advisable due to limited parking. This quintessential Mediterranean haven sits in a beautiful cove dotted with stunning houses, complete with a beach bar for cocktails and sunbeds for relaxation.
The main local town, Santa Eulalia, is just a five-minute drive away. It's a delightful place to wander, with a harbour hosting yachts that rivals glittering Marbella. Quaint shops, boutiques, and street markets add to its vibrant yet refined character, often considered more sophisticated than busier San Antonio or Ibiza Town. Santa Eulalia boasts a strong gastronomic reputation with excellent restaurants and bars. Don't miss the Passeig de s'Alamera, a tree-lined promenade with outdoor sculptures, terraces, and craft markets, or the 16th-century Puig de Missa church on a hill with panoramic coastal views. The town also features the island's only river with a Roman bridge, art galleries, and Casa Zobel for contemporary art.
Gentle Clubbing and Adrenaline-Fuelled Fun
No trip to Ibiza would be complete without experiencing its legendary nightlife. We chose Pikes, a historic club in the hills above San Antonio, founded twenty-seven years ago and frequented by A-list celebrities and tourists alike. It provided the perfect, fun-filled evening without requiring all-night endurance. For adventure seekers, Sant Joan de Labritja offers adrenaline rushes, where locals leap from rocks at least fifteen feet high into the sea—an activity my husband bravely joined, much to my breath-holding concern!
Travel Essentials for Your Ibiza Escape
Rooms at Fergus Style Punta Arabi start from approximately one hundred and forty-five euros per night, including breakfast. This autumn escape allowed us to avoid summer crowds and high temperatures, making it an ideal short break with maximum impact. Ibiza's hippy charm and clubbing heritage can indeed be enjoyed in a laid-back manner, proving that you don't need to stay up all night to capture the island's magical essence.
