Lightning Strike Blasts 10-Foot Hole in Family Home, Causing £20,000 Damage
Lightning Strike Creates 10-Foot Hole in Home, £20K Damage

A pregnant mother in North Yorkshire has been left facing a staggering £20,000 repair bill after a catastrophic lightning strike blasted a 10-foot hole in her family home, causing widespread destruction and forcing the household to evacuate.

The Terrifying Explosion

Tara Craven, 28, described the incident as a 'bomb-like' explosion that engulfed her three-bedroom house in Gristhorpe near Filey at 8pm on Wednesday, March 25. At the time, she was washing dishes while her husband Joseph, 32, was bathing their two young sons, aged two and three.

The house suddenly shook violently, lights blew out, and the family rushed outside with their dog to discover their property had been hit by a massive lightning bolt. Mrs. Craven, who is just four weeks from giving birth, said: 'We had no idea what had happened – other than it came as a huge shock, it was terrifying.'

Immediate Aftermath and Damage

Outside, car alarms were blaring, and the home began filling with dust and a strong electrical burning smell. Firefighters responded to the explosion, which ripped off the chimney and part of the roof. Pictures reveal significant interior damage, including destroyed walls, caved-in ceilings, and a smashed conservatory roof.

The lightning strike also exploded the family's television, filling the living room with dust and debris. With electricity shut off for safety, the Craven family was forced to relocate to a Travelodge in Scarborough.

Powerful Impact and Community Effects

Mrs. Craven noted: 'We went into our garden the next day and found bricks scattered up to 30 feet away, meaning it was really powerful. Bricks also damaged our next-door neighbour’s house, and one hit the roof of another neighbour’s car.'

The storm left multiple homes without power in the Gristhorpe area after striking a telegraph pole. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service reported that crews from Scarborough and Filey responded, conducting house-to-house checks for fire signs and advising residents. The incident was handed over to electricity board engineers.

Uncertain Future and Community Support

The mother said her family has yet to be told when they can return home, adding: 'At least no one was hurt or worse, so we have to count our blessings. We don’t know when we will be able to move back in, which is frustrating.'

In a heartening response, more than £2,000 has been raised in an online fundraiser to assist the family during this difficult time. The event highlights the unpredictable dangers of severe weather and the resilience of communities in supporting those affected.
