West London Residents Fear Shops Become Fast Food or Supermarket

Residents in a close-knit West London community are opposing plans that could see three independent shops replaced by a large chain retailer such as McDonald's or Tesco. The proposal, submitted to Kensington and Chelsea Council, seeks to combine a grocer, a café, and a dry cleaners into a single 87-square-metre retail unit with a new shopfront. The affected businesses are located in Harrington Court, part of the South Kensington Shopping Centre.

Community Concerns

Local residents have submitted multiple objections, expressing fears that the loss of these independent shops would harm the area's character. One objector wrote: "I want to object to this planning application as it is not good for our local business to lose these three shops. We love our little community." Another resident voiced worries that the combined unit would become a McDonald's, Sainsbury's, or Tesco, noting: "These three local shops are providing a lot of things and they are very convenient for all the community. I do my dry cleaning, buy fruit, and at the same time get my tea and coffee from these shops."

Planning Details

The application includes creating a new staircase with a fire-safe corridor to access the basement. While amalgamating units typically does not require planning permission, changes to the shopfront necessitate council approval. Sketch, the design firm behind the plans, stated: "The proposed development seeks to deliver a high-quality, well-considered design that enhances the visual and functional character of the existing building and the wider streetscape. The amalgamation of three small commercial units into a single, larger retail unit will make more efficient use of the premises, improve accessibility, and create a more attractive frontage that contributes positively to the local townscape."
