Wanstead Leisure Centre Redevelopment Faces New Delay as Contractor Collapses
Wanstead Leisure Centre Hit by Contractor Administration Delay

The long-awaited redevelopment of Wanstead Leisure Centre has encountered another significant obstacle, casting doubt on its completion timeline. The main contractor overseeing the project, Jerram Falkus, has entered administration, halting progress on the £20 million scheme that includes a new 25-metre swimming pool and four modern classrooms.

Contractor Collapse Derails Progress

Jerram Falkus, a Shoreditch-based home-builder and refurbishment firm with 140 years of history, went into administration last month despite appearing financially stable. Redbridge Council had enlisted the company to lead the major redevelopment, which began in 2022. In a statement, the council expressed disappointment, noting that the setback occurred as the project neared completion, though it emphasized that the situation was beyond its control.

Council's Commitment Amid Setbacks

Redbridge Council has taken possession of the land from administrators and deployed security guards while searching for a new contractor. The council reassured parents, staff, and the community that its dedication to the project remains unwavering. Work to appoint a replacement contractor has commenced to minimize disruption during the final stages.

The leisure centre upgrade was first promised in 2014 by former leader Jas Athwal, now MP for Ilford South, following Labour's victory in local elections. Initially slated for completion last summer, the new target of this summer is now unlikely due to the latest delays. Historically, the council has cited challenging ground conditions as a factor in the slow progress.

Broader Impact and Community Concerns

The £20 million redevelopment aims to benefit generations with enhanced leisure facilities and improved educational spaces. However, the project has faced persistent challenges over eight years, contrasting with three other leisure centres built in Fullwell Cross, Loxford, and Mayfield. Jerram Falkus was also involved in an unfinished modular homes project in Bow for Tower Hamlets Council, highlighting wider implications of its collapse.

Redbridge Council has pledged to provide regular updates as more information becomes available, addressing understandable concerns from the local community about the prolonged delays and future of the vital infrastructure project.
