A massive fire has broken out in a block of maisonettes on Mount Pleasant Lane in Clapton, Hackney, East London, prompting a major response from the London Fire Brigade. More than 70 firefighters are currently battling the blaze, which was first reported at around 8pm on Tuesday, May 5.
Firefighters on Scene
The London Fire Brigade confirmed that ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been deployed to the scene. Crews from Stoke Newington, Tottenham, Homerton, and surrounding fire stations are working to contain the fire. A 32-metre turntable ladder has also been brought in to assist with the operation.
Smoke Warning for Residents
The fire is producing a significant amount of smoke, which is visible across the area. The brigade has issued a warning for local residents to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke travel. Pictures and videos shared online show a column of dark smoke rising into the sky above a church steeple, with one witness stating that the fire "started before my eyes so quickly."
The London Fire Brigade stated: "Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been called to a fire on Mount Pleasant Lane in Clapton. The building is affecting a block of maisonettes. The fire is producing a significant amount of smoke and we are advising people in the local area to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke travel."
Fire crews continue to work at the scene, and further updates are expected as the situation develops.
