East London could soon boast a new multi-use sports venue larger than the O2 Arena, according to recently unveiled plans. The proposed 'London Colosseum' would seat 25,000 spectators, making it 25% bigger than the 20,000-capacity O2 and surpassing Manchester's 23,500-seat Co-op Live as the largest indoor arena in the UK.
Key Features and Location
The arena is slated for a site within the Olympic Park in Stratford, adjacent to the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, now home to West Ham United. If approved, it could become the potential home for an NBA London franchise as part of the league's planned European expansion. Additionally, the venue is expected to host boxing, UFC, esports, and other international sports tournaments.
Multi-Functional Design
Ondrej Chybik, an architect from the Czech firm Kristof + Chybik, which is designing the site, explained: 'The London Colosseum's bowl design allows the arena floor to effortlessly adapt to accommodate 18,000 and up to 25,000 spectators across diverse sporting and entertainment events. By prioritising genuine multi-functionality, the arena and its surrounding public spaces are built to evolve, actively combating the inefficiency of traditional, single-use stadiums.'
The development also includes a second site with two smaller 3,000-seat venues and a multifunctional tower featuring hotels, residential flats, and community spaces. Chybik added: 'A key component of the proposal is a multifunctional tower, featuring a hotel, residences and community facilities, that brings together hospitality, residential, and community uses, extending the life of the site beyond event-based programming and embedding it within the everyday rhythm of the city.'
Sports and Entertainment Campus
The project will encompass a sports and entertainment campus called the London Colosseum Academy. This will include a dedicated basketball school, the Peacock Boxing Gym & Academy, and an international esports training centre created in partnership with a leading London sports university.
The London Lions basketball team, which counts Love Island star Ovie Soko among its players, has been searching for a larger venue within the M25 with the backing of Mayor Sadiq Khan. However, it remains unclear whether this search is linked to the Colosseum project.
Current Status
The planning process is still in its early stages, with designs only recently made public. No construction timeline has been released yet. The proposal represents a significant potential addition to London's sporting infrastructure, aiming to provide a versatile venue for major events while integrating residential and community facilities.
