Croydon Westfield Images Show Shop Locations and Project Name

Croydon residents have been presented with a comprehensive new vision for the transformation of their town centre, as developers release detailed images showcasing the future layout of shops, restaurants, and public spaces. Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW), the owner of both the Whitgift and Centrale shopping centres, is spearheading this ambitious regeneration initiative, now officially named The Croydon Project.

Visualizing the Future of Croydon

The newly released images provide a vivid glimpse into how the area could evolve, featuring a central public square that will replace the current Whitgift Centre site. This square is envisioned to be surrounded by a dynamic mix of retail outlets, dining establishments, and hotel accommodations, creating a vibrant hub for both residents and visitors. The release follows the successful September relaunch of the historic Allders building, marking another step forward in the area's renewal.

A Long-Awaited Development

Originally conceived as a shopping destination similar to White City, The Croydon Project has faced significant delays since its initial target completion date of 2017. Despite these setbacks, progress is now evident with ongoing refurbishments of shops along North End and a planning application submitted in early 2026 to enhance the Central area. The latest proposals directly address community feedback from previous consultations, emphasizing greener public spaces, improved accessibility, and expanded cultural and leisure offerings.

Community Input and Strategic Vision

Adam Smith, URW's strategic development director, emphasized the project's goals: "The Croydon Project aims to reimagine Croydon town centre and restore its role as the economic and creative capital of South London. Our ambition is to create a thriving mixed-use destination with new homes, public spaces, and a vibrant mix of retail, leisure, and cultural activity that reflects Croydon’s energy and creativity." He highlighted that this long-term regeneration will inject new life and investment into the heart of the town centre, with community feedback remaining a cornerstone of the planning process.

Opportunities for Public Engagement

Residents, business owners, and visitors are strongly encouraged to review the latest masterplan ideas and share their thoughts. To facilitate this, a series of pop-up events are scheduled for this month:

  • Tuesday, March 17 - 2pm–6pm at Norwood High Street and Norwood Junction Station
  • Thursday, March 19 - 11am–2pm at Surrey Street Market

The proposals are also available for online viewing through The Croydon Project website, ensuring widespread access for all interested parties. This next round of consultation offers local people a crucial chance to help shape the evolving masterplan, ensuring the development aligns with community needs and aspirations.
