The Pacific Airshow made a triumphant return to the Gold Coast over the weekend, drawing more than 250,000 spectators to Surfers Paradise beach for a three-day spectacle of aerobatic feats and military jets. The event, which was cancelled last year due to damage caused by Cyclone Alfred, is predicted to bring a $40m economic benefit to the city, according to the Gold Coast mayor.
A Weekend of Aviation Thrills
First held in California in 2016, the airshow came to Queensland in 2023 but was forced to skip 2025 after the cyclone wreaked havoc on the region. This year's edition featured a mix of historical aircraft, military fighter jets, and stunt planes, all set against the iconic Surfers Paradise skyline. The beach was packed with dedicated aviation enthusiasts, families with toddlers, and everyone in between, all looking skyward along Cavill Avenue.
Among the highlights were the Screaming Diamonds, a crowd favourite aerobatic team, and the RAAF F-35A display, which was described as "a sight and experience to behold." The Red Bull stunt team also performed, offering distant glimpses between buildings as they executed their daring maneuvers.
Community and Spectacle
The event wasn't just about planes. Attendees like Sygourney Ball showed up in theme, ready for a big day, while Maverick and Rooster impersonators posed for photos with Gold Coast local Kerry Armitage. The atmosphere was festive, with everyone sharing a common love for aviation.
Weather played a role over the weekend, with last glints of sunlight on Saturday afternoon before the weather closed in. However, after some changeable conditions, the clouds parted in time for the final aerobatic displays, ensuring a spectacular conclusion.
Economic Impact and Future Prospects
The Gold Coast mayor highlighted the event's significance, noting the predicted $40m economic benefit to the city. With over 250,000 attendees, the airshow not only entertained but also bolstered local businesses and tourism. The successful return bodes well for future editions, as the Gold Coast cements its reputation as a premier destination for major events.
